small vs big.

Smart homes with a smartphone-like screen? It just makes all the sense in the world, doesn’t it? Amazon clearly thought so and now we have the Echo Show and Echo Spot. Alexa enabled smart devices that have the added convenience of a touchscreen. The Spot and Show have tried to make your life as easy as they can, by allowing you to interact with them as is convenient for you. At the end of the day, that is what smart technology is about, making things easier for you.

The Spot and show can do all the things other Echo devices can: manage your calendar, play your music, broadcast throughout your home, inform you about the weather, manage your smart appliances and order thongs online. The added benefit of both these devices is that you can also see information, not just hear it. Instead of Alexa reading you the news highlights or weather, she can now show it to you. You can also see who’s at the front door or what mischief your toddler is getting up to in the nursery.

A huge drawback on both the Spot and show is that you do not have access to Youtube. This is due to Amazon and Google currently taking a relationship break. Hopefully, they’ll be able to sort out their differences soon. You need to think about what you’ll be using this device for and decide if the screen is worth it without Youtube. It still has a lot of functions, even without, you can still see the song’s name or determine what the device is busy doing.

The biggest difference between Echo Spot and the Echo Show is the screen size. If you just want to see what’s going on in your home and maybe a short video, the spot will do fine. If you want to watch longer videos and see presentations, the Echo Show might be a better option. The Spot also has a 3.5 mm jack to connect to external speakers, the show doesn’t, and can only connect via Bluetooth or Wifi. Probably the most obvious difference is their appearance; Spot is almost, well, spot shaped. It looks like a ball with a screen pressed into it. The Echo Show looks more like what you would traditionally expect a smart home assistant should look like. A flat rectangle with a speaker on a stand.

The choice is yours, are you going for the tiny spot or a bigger show?
